Me and a mate want to sync our two Macbook pro's with Live running on each one of them. We want to be able to sync or metronomes and be in sync with each others beats. How is this possible?
Thanks
Syncing two macs running Ableton Live
Re: Syncing two macs running Ableton Live
midi out --> midi in
get midi interfaces (or one midi interface and one midi/usb cable)

just match the bpm and both of you hit play at the same time, then one of you nudge the tempo to get the metronomes in sync.

Re: Syncing two macs running Ableton Live
I've been using midi over lan to pretty good effect and doesn't need any extra hardware...
connect the macs together with a LAN(network) cable.
open up the audio midi setup in utilities
click "window" > show midi window
double click the network bit.
Create a session with the same name on both machines and make sure you are using the same port. i use 5004 but this is probably just the default.
then you should see the other computer in your directory. just hit connect and you should pop into the participants.
then go to Live prefs and 'network' should be an option in the midi prefs. choose which machine is master/slave and set sync ins and outs accordingly...

do both need to be macs?
Re: Syncing two macs running Ableton Live
i would think he actually wants to keep them in sync automatically so this is not the way to do it.S wrote:just match the bpm and both of you hit play at the same time, then one of you nudge the tempo to get the metronomes in sync.
absolutely not. midi data cares not about the os. keep in mind that you don't even need a computer at all to midi sync things.MarkA wrote:do both need to be macs?
this post tells how to do what you want to do using midi sync:
