I subscribe to spotify, think it's quality, if I hear an album or track I really like I'll buy it.

Anything that's i3, 5 or 7 based with 3GB of RAM or above should be fine.

We use HP (business) desktops, solid, though can't say I've had too much experience using their laptops.

Agreed with the macbook purchase, you can always buy a monitor for it later if you find using the screen isn't to your liking.

You can add Toshiba to the list of good Windows based laptops.

One thing that's worth doing is a fresh install of Windows if you can, if not spend some time removing any applications that come pre-installed.
