Native Insturments Abbey road drum samples, realy good i use it a lot... Or just sample the live snare from a live band, you have tons of that kind of tracks, just digg a little.

Just use low pass filter, i always "clean" my snares, i cut everything up to almost 300hz, and it sounds good in the mix most of the times sometimes i go even higher.

I love the kicks from old school soul and jazz tracks, but they are so silent you must compress it or something, i use the psp wintage warmer to get that Raw phat sound. Sometimes i use Drumazone 909 kit (vst), its amazing for big booming bassy kicks, but you must play a little to get where you want...
