It should be noted that some older tuners/amplifiers have excellent preamps in them. I've had several of them and dj mixers... and I have this old phono preamp box with no stickers watsoever on it as well. I'm currently using this 70's Toshiba Sa-520 in my living room+Shure M95ed (on a thorens tt). ...

Amen. Proper cleaning and poof... it sounds noticeably. Very much so in some cases.

Also, cleaning a record will prolong it's life substantially. Dust is enemy #1.

Any other ideas? Tape freak here... it's now part of my recording chain, nearly everything goes through the Otari. Different tape formulations render different results... kinda like changing tubes in a pre... Another trick is running sounds through a speaker and a mic. Overdriven cardboard cones so...
