You can use Ableton like an MPC pretty easily... it's not all about the piano grid. Sometimes I just use as an audio or MIDI looper.

I can see the MIDI keyboard thing -- it's hard to draw a groovy bassline -- but drum machine? You still have to program drum machines on a step sequencer, which is basically the same thing as a piano roll. Unless you're talking about something like an MPC.
