I've never had great results from layering the kick drum.
To me the sweetest kick comes from 1 oscillator with a carefully tweaked pitch envelope, and light compression with slow attack to amplify the decay period of the wave slightly.
A great example is the 909 kick, as many have already said. Beautiful kick, that.

they are certainly the real deal, and unfortunately sampling them kills them dead.sorgenkind wrote:the real solution:

I put my hands on a 808 recently so now the two beasts are sitting next to each other, layering their kick gives me some dope kicks.
If you don't have the machines, go with samples, but remember, layering is the best way to achevie fat drums
i've only ever recorded one track with a sample of my 909 instead of the real thing, and its the one track ive released that sounds lifeless.
roland kicks breath, they never play bang on the beat, and tiny variations in the sound keep you interested. its hard to explain this to someone whos never experienced a live 909 or 808.
also for fatness and depth, instead of layering, you can put the kick through an analogue filter, with just a hint of self oscillation, and you can get loads of variety, adding more or less sinewave sub / attack / decay etc.
for a punchy 909 bassdrum or soft 808 kicks just try the jomox mbase01.
i really like that little fat monster.
