Good call, this is absolutely correct. Sine waves don't respond well to filtering because they are, by definition, just a fundamental frequency and nothing else. Definitely use something else like a saw or pulse wave (or something even more harmonically complex, like a found sound) for this task.

Use some dynamics plugin to crank it up and make sure you cut off all unneccesary frequencies with a filter or EQ them out:)

just take a simple sinewave (in simpler for example) and play low notes, shape em (eq, effects, whatever)..that's an easy way. :idea:

I get my best results by using a harmonically rich waveform (like saw, or something, but best is moving and lots of noise) and then filterng that down quite drastically. It makes for a more full sub sound than just using a sinewave.

Some people are getting real deep into tuning.

Id just learn to trust your ears. A lot of the time not having things perfect is a lot more sonically pleasing and maintains a certain charchter.
