Grimy metallic percussion sounds in Kalon - Haiku

Post by damagedgoods »

These must be sampled/recorded, right? If not, anyone have any idea how one might go about synthesising those weird, metallic tribal percussion sounds? Surgeon et al have a similar thing going on at times but this is less industrial and more organic...

It's probably a mix of sampled and synthetic sounds, though you could probably synthesize most of them.

For the clangy metallic sounds, try setting two square waves to some dissonant interval and filtering out the lows with a hp-filter for a start. Then it's "just" a matter of tweaking the envelopes, maybe adding some noise, fm, a comb filter or short delay, reverb et cetera -- just go crazy :)

Check out the Sound on Sound "Synth Secrets" articles on drum synthesis on http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm for some great advice.

Yeah if it's the sound I'm thinking of it'll probably be some measured tweaking of some multi-op FM/feedback setup. Or something.

PS, please don't copy it, I love that record :P
