These must be sampled/recorded, right? If not, anyone have any idea how one might go about synthesising those weird, metallic tribal percussion sounds? Surgeon et al have a similar thing going on at times but this is less industrial and more organic...

It's probably a mix of sampled and synthetic sounds, though you could probably synthesize most of them.
For the clangy metallic sounds, try setting two square waves to some dissonant interval and filtering out the lows with a hp-filter for a start. Then it's "just" a matter of tweaking the envelopes, maybe adding some noise, fm, a comb filter or short delay, reverb et cetera -- just go crazy
