I dont like waves. They seem like quite an arrogant company.
There are small indepedent plugin companies with only several (or even only 1 member of) staff, who go out of their way to accomodate all users (within reason), whereas wave's attitude is much more like 'fck you', even though they have a large team.
The plugins are loaded thru a 'shell' which seems bloated and unnecessary.
I think their upgrade policy is not too friendly either.
Some of the plugs are supposed to be nice quality, but there are other companies with just as high quality, in many cases probably even higher. (though like Tone Def says many of them are still not gonna be as nice as high end hardware).
Well anyways, off the top of my head, these guys have good reputations for eq/compression/limters etc etc... Sonalksis, Stillwell, DDMF, PSPaudioware, Kjaerhus, Voxengo.

I used to use renaisance stuff a lot like the compresser, reverb, bass boost and eq they always came up with goods I used to like the limiters like someone else said great for boosting track volume in a transparent fashion.
I now use logic and I must say that I like their plug ins I no complaints. I sometimes think that its easy to get too hung up slight differences in sound quality. However if you are rich or have money to burn The Waves plugins will do what you want them to.

Take Audio Damage or Voxengo for example. Those are way better sounding effects for a fraction of the Waves price.

Just purchased EOS from AD and it's one hell of a reverb. For 50 bucks.
