anyone know anything about this reel-to-reel

Post by livecollective »

I am looking at picking up a 1976 Dokorder 1120 reel to reel, to utilize for a make shift tape delay and to add some soft tape compression to some things... price is around 200 hundred, wondering if this is what I should be looking for. I understand the amount of effort it takes to keep one of these things running, is this a good model I should be looking at?

You could prolly get an A77 for that, no? Don't know anything about this machine, but Revoxes are meant to be pretty reliable. I've got a 40-year-old B77 which is working fine apart from the time indicator.

It is a consumer unit, it wasn't a pro audio unit when it was new.

Unless the thing is in immaculate condition and comes with a few take up reels, the price is a little high. I wouldn't pay that much for a consumer deck.

You might want to save a bit more and spend more on a pro deck that can be serviced. Revox decks were big in Europe and there is a decent sized legacy parts market. The problem with consumer decks is that the parts and service manuals are really hard to come by.

You are going to need a service manual and you are going to need to learn to do all repairs and maintenance yourself unless your parents are very wealthy. ;^)

Also, you will need to buy a reference tape so that you can bias and align the tape heads. A reference tape in the US runs about $250, dunno about Europe.
