What i find with the DSI tetra as soon as i start going in the lower ranges, the sub oscilator starts to sound grainy and envelopes just turn to sh!t. The filters sound nothing like the moog or even Juno. I have gotten good sounds out of it but I'm thinking I can do more with a specific synth.

i think the DE is a good option, but you could always start off a small modular (sorry for the M word) as the DE is available as a module in the A100 range;

its alot cheaper than the DE, but you would need a small case & PSU, (and a midi /CV convertor unless you already have one) which would bring it up to the same price, however it would be expandable if you get a slightly bigger case than you need, in future you could add a different filter if you wanted more variety with the sound, or an extra oscillator etc...
