Of iMac's, ableton and cueing...

I'm relatively new to the mac world, I was a pc user until this past year...

long story short: What hardware do I need to have dual outputs that can be used for programs like ableton and traktor that have a headphone cueing function?

Is it as simple as adding a USB device that can take care of my headphone output and just continue to use my main output for just that?

One of the few times that I feel clueless about anything.. I know that there's all kinds of big external audio interfaces and things, but I want something as cheap as possible and don't need the extra inputs and things.

check the echo indigo cards....they add another audio output to your computer

the accessories store at apple has an audio department, that's where this link is heading to)

i'm leading you more towards the accessories coz audio equipment stuff will get you the extra's you don't need (i think). still:

I love them, but they are laptop only/pcmia are they not?
I've got the G4 imac with swivel screen... looking for a solution for it.

I am using a M-Audio Firewire 410 with a Mac and ableton 4 and have been pretty happy with it. The only thing that is a pain is that the out in Live only seems to be mono, so you only get one channel (i have actually been meaning to look into that, but it hasn't bothered me enough yet). All you need is an interface the supports at least 4 outs and ableton can assign what goes where. I personally really like m-audio's stuff- the 410 also gives you a fairly decent mic pre-amp and line level ins, as well as a better headphone pre-amp than Mac's, the ins being very useful in ableton. They also have liftime warranties on all their stuff, so if it ever breaks all you gotta do is call them and send it to them and it's all free and fairly quick, that kind of guarantee seeming to be increasingly rare in our wonderful world of planned obsolescence.

Anything cheaper? I don't want a whole rig with ins and outs, just a simple additional output taht would come off the usb on my keyboard or something

you could hook up your headphones directly to the 1/8 inch jack and it's way cheaper. And it's even cheaper on sweetwater.com...
