they made homework at home (mom's attic) with minimal setup. it just so happend that they knew the right people to master it.

Have you even read about what Oakenfold and other trance acts did before the "sellout" as you put it? Some pretty big djs like Vath and Dag also did the trance thing, before they began to spin "minimal".

I don`t think that Daft Punk did all that work in the attic. Do you know who Thomas Bangalter father is? Daniel Vangarde....

What is wrong with people making big bucks on "hype" as some put it?
That is the price the market are willing to pay. All about supply and
demand.

Daft Punk odviously had a leg up, in the music biz. But they still said they made Homework by themselves in their bedroom studio. In my eyes they have definetly earned their respect.

as far as what Oakenfold did before he got huge.. i could really care less.
and i'm not just dissing trance. its certainly a valid art-form, and the genre has produced many brilliant tracks.

and i never said there was anything wrong with making big bucks on hype.
i would welcome it with open arms in my life.

OK I'V HEARD ENOUGH FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY........LET ME BREAK IT DOWN FOR YOU TO THE SIMPLEST TERMS POSSIBLE.

The Golden Rule
Make a decision to either listen to everyone or listen to nobody. Cherrypicking the information you want to hear will only fck you up in the long run as it relates to you and your music because allot of people out there will just tell you they like your sh!t just to spare your feelings and the closer you move to europe the more smoke they will blow up your ass so beware. If you want honest opinions find people that don't like techno and have them listen to it because that is really who you want to like your music. All the artists in electronic music that made it big are ones who created an audiences for themselves outside of the box of their own genre.

The Platinum Rule
Quit yap yappin' about this sh!t and shut up and make a hit. In the music buisness you don't even fucking exist until you make a hit. The hard thing about this is that nobody to this day knows what makes a hit. All they know is that it usually seems to happen more often to people that work thier asses off. It has been known to happen randomly on occassion but that is rare.

It's the truth though
In the US people are way more vocal with their opinions and employ much less tact. That's probably why you all think we're a bunch of assholes. I know in Detroit for example you have to be producing some seious fire in order to even get any props at all. If you come with some bullshit you threw together without any passion or funk to it most of the people here will do you a favor and tell straight up that it's bullshit. In fact that's the best thing you can do to somebody starting out is to tell them when they bring you some bullshit. The ones who have the real drive for battle will go back home and keep on doing it and never give it up until they come back with something that will blow minds. The ones that get discouraged and give up don't have the heart it takes in the first place. This game is a battle and the best thing you can do for somebody is prepare them for it. Most of all though you need to be relentlessly hard on yourself otherwise praise will make you soft.

in that case, surely you have to be careful that you don't just end up making music that pleases other people, rather than making music to please yourself? OK, maybe people won't like it enough to want to release it.....but surely better to have something that's YOURS remaining unreleased, than to have a record out that's been edited at the request of various others to the point where it's not what you intended to create?
Its not about making music to please other people. (though ultimately you want this to happen) Its about improvement and progression in the art which often requires constructive criticism and blatant failure.

its a strange investment of time and money

you won't get money out right away

it is not a get rich quick scheme

you will gain personal insight and growth

perhaps respect among your peers

but you must always challenge yourself

and follow your sound.

most of all

write classics

write something you would appreciate

and could stand behind in 10, 20, 100 years

it is all you will be remembered by

best make it your best
