MAC:
get logic express at least along with ableton live and a few sounds. you can do almost anything you could ever want to with this combo.
PC: cubase + ableton live: somewhat compairable but not the same. Just depends on how much you can stretch the software. Acid Pro is actually still one of the sweetest arrangement and loop stretching softwares on the market. plus with the enhanced midi functionality, it makes a great software package.
Again.... its what you are comfortable with!
