Minimal music - minimal art

Post by victor »

Hi folks,

I am doing research for my school project, a paper on minimal-art-influenced cover art. I'm trying to focus on minimal music covers, where "minimal music" can be John Cage, Steve Reich as well as, say, Plastikman's works, stuff from Perlon or Jan Jelinek / Farben.
Suitable works would be the m_nus or tresor label logos, the covers of Sähkö, Studio 1, Trapez, you get the idea. I'm digging my records, old magazines, discogs.com, but could happily do with more stuff :) So, if you have some ideas, don't hesitate, drop a line or even a (printable) picture :)

Thanks very much in advance,

Victor

well i don't know about cd covers but i guess that you could look around at all genres of music to find covers that are minimal, how about the white album for instance?

but as far as art goes here are a few famous artists-
donald judd
tony smith
frank stella
mya lin- made the vietnam memorial in washington dc

that's all i got for the time being.

Basically everything from the labelgroup http://www.raster-noton.de would probably be of interest. Also the designer http://www.alorenz.net/ who has done cover art for Mitek for exampel.

Perhaps you should also check out Richie's brother Mathew Hawtins work. http://www.mhawtin.com/

Thanks guy for all your hints, there is great stuff on those pages!

provaznik: you're centainly right, there are tons of minimal art inspired covers, yet I do have to draw a line somewhere, as this is not going to be my doctoral thesis ;) I'm of course familiar with the artist you mentioned, but I'm looking for design promoting (minimal) music, such as covers, corporate design (maybe even club decoration).

Cheers.

maybe try looking at the bauhaus in berlin and all the work it put out from its inception to now. i know that this is not exactly relavent to what you are looking for but i do think that it is important to see where something started to see where it is, and is going. am i making any sense?
