Social System (Pheek vs Off The Sky) - Live

Pheek - JP became interested in acid house in the late ’80s and raves in early ’90s, inspiring him to DJ his own radio shows in Sherbrooke, Québec. From his college years to university, he played techno, house and anything exciting to people whose ears weren’t as close to the ground. Upon moving to Montreal in 1997 to study computer science, JP met Mateo Murphy and found they shared similar musical interests. After performing a show with Gez Varley, Mateo and JP decided to work on a live concept of their own, based on improvising beats on the fly and mixing in other synthesized sonic textures. It was at this point that JP adopted the name of Pheek after a Richie Hawtin/Plastikman performance at Medialounge, a show that would forever change his perspective on music. After further honing their live show together, Pheek and Mateo opened for Chain Reaction at the FCMM in 1999. They were spotted by Hautec and offered to release a 12", marking a turning point in their fledgling careers. The few years that followed saw proposed releases on Hybrid Structure and collaborations with Mitchell Akiyama on various projects – a creative period that proved a catalyst for JP’s later success. The next pivotal point in Pheek’s career was meeting Éloi Brunelle and subsequently being invited to join to the Epsilonlab media collective. JP played with them since the very first night of their existence and for almost every show to follow. His first release for Epsilonlab, 2002’s Paysages Matriciels, was a critical success and was nominated for Quebec’s prestigious ADISQ music awards. Another milestone was the label Minus who noticed Pheek's demo and Richie Hawtin who started playing his music along with Magda. That kind of feedback from major DJ made him move forward in his production. Then he got in contact with labels such as Contexterrior and Telegraph with who he released some material.

Off The Sky - once upon a time.. off the sky began creating music in his mothers womb by banging on the uteris wall and plucking his embelical cord to cope with the isolation. he was freed in 1977 and upgraded his kit to a sterling pots-n-pans set. many years later post advent of the 386, jason traded in his pots and pans and began exploring the void of 1's and 0's via mod tracker software. after a couple years of experimentation, he left for art college, thus setting his music on the shelf... for a bit... in 1998 he began traveling to various electronic music festivals which helped catapult him back into producing. using hybrid tracking software such as buzz, jason began to mold his style. but after realizing the creative shortcomings of programatic music, he decided to integrate a more conventional means into his mix: using guitar, piano, field recordings, and more powerful sound manipulation software such as max/msp, reaktor, and cubase. today jason resides by the beaches of southern California and writes humble ambient music in colaboration with other working musicians

Bruno Pronsato - Live

Bruno Pronsato - has been subverting expectations within techno?s upper echelons since 2003-but the Seattle producer took a circuitous path to reach his current lofty status. A former speed-metal drummer with a serious appreciation for 12-tone composers, Pronsato began creating electronic music in 1999 under the moniker Bobby Karate. His sole album in that guise-2003?s Hot Trips, Cold Returns-mutated microsound into a cornucopia of fascinating shapes. However, later that year, Ford transferred his acumen for advanced tone-bending into the experimental-techno realm, as evidenced by Pronsato?s debut 12?, Read_Me (for the Kompakt-distributed Orac Records). Pronsato followed that with the acclaimed full-length Silver Cities (Orac), a phenomenal derangement of dance-music tropes and an ear-tricking delight on headphones. Stellar reviews in XLR8R, The Wire, The Stranger, and various European zines led to interest from elite labels worldwide, including Canada?s Musique Risquee, which issued the Ape Masquerade EP in 2005. A powerful, exciting set at Montreal?s 2005 Mutek festival has furthered Pronsato?s ascendancy within avant-techno circles.

In October the 555 Gallery will be hosting a Profiling exhibition. As the lines of profiling grow more diverse, it is important to ask: Who and what are being profiled in our society? Any person who has been overtly profiled is uncomfortably familiar with the feeling of bald scrutiny, yet profiling today is pan-spectral and often under - the - radar. In this exhibition, 555 Studio/Gallery encourages the public to consider the means and motives behind profiling. If you would like to take part in this exhibition please contact the 555 Studio/Gallery 555
