what is the best free delay VST. I use the built in ableton ones, but like to stack a few up. have tried the Kjaerhus one but am not to keen on the controls......

Togu Audio Line has a series of delays called "Tal-Dub". I've mostly used Tal-Dub II, there's a newer incarnation called Tal-Dub III but has a different set of controls. Good for filtered & saturated feedback loops.

Soundhack Delay Trio does some tricks which most delays don't (for example granular effect in feedback loop).

ValhallaFreqEcho by ValhallaDSP has also a frequency shifter, guaranteed dubby weirdness when playing with the controls realtime.

All of these are also available as OSX VST & Audio Unit.
