How Music Works Series

Post by Shepherd_of_Anu »

Came across a great documentary about music called "How Music Works." Here are the links to the second episode which is about rhythm. Maybe eventually I will get around to watching the rest and post the links to the other episodes too. There are ones about melody, harmony and basses.

I really liked this documentary because the host Howard Goodall explains the different subtle factors which create the feeling in different kinds of rhythm. Often he will play examples of a type of rhythm with and without a particular nuance. Its also cool that he talks about rhythm in non-percussive music which is something I think a lot of people don't think much about.

I am really glad that I watched this because I discovered the name of a composer whose music I have often heard but never knew. Phillip Glass is his name. I love this style of composition. I enjoy experimenting with making music like this. Sometimes just taking a few notes and playing them over and over in different ways. Once I got so lost in what I was doing I had kind of a hallucination of a memory, a moment in time when I was flying in an airplane watching the clouds and thinking about a life I had just left behind. It was really intense.

I saw these videos, can't remember where now, might have been BBC2? Yeah, pretty interesting stuff.

Heard of Phillip Glass before, not my cup of tea though that thing. Video is unavailable in UK though anyways.

Glad you guys liked it. I watched the bass episode and unfortunately it wasn't as good as the rhythm one. The rhythm one had a lot more with and without technique examples which I thought were really great.

"What the Future Sounded Like"

What an intriguing title. I find his thoughts about being repressed by this traditional music instruction interesting. Sometimes I wonder what the best way to be introduced to music is. What will make a person more creative. Rigorous and formal discipline followed by a loosening up and exploration or is it better to just wander about the world of sound, picking things up a little at a time? Before I have kids I am going to do some research on this subject.
