At what point does a remix become an original mix?

Post by Anteuro »

I recently got asked to work on a remix for PM Recordings with the intention of my work being included on the original mix single of Halev's 'Another Night'.

As my work progressed I realised my mix was straying further and further from the original, and the only sound file I ended up using from the original was the vocal - and even then sparingly and heavily processed.

I understand that because my mix features this very recognisable vocal and it is prominent within the track my final work must be considered a re-mix, and let me stress I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity!

However, it did get me wondering: At what point can what started out as a re-mix be considered an original mix? If, for example, sound sources from the original are used but are implemented in such a way that they are no longer recognisable..is it still a re-mix? What do you guys look for in a re-mix? A completely new take on the original or a slightly altered version?

Here is my work

as long as you use something from the parts of the original, it got to be a remix.

like that choice of words man!

Just to be doubly clear, I am not trying to claim my particular track as an original mix, but while working on this project it got me wondering if there are any tracks out there that blur the line between a remix and an original mix..
