AIRDROP 006 - SOUL CLAP - PUPPY CRACK w/ M. STAVOSTRAND RMX
Hey All! Announcing AIRDROP's sixth release with Soul Clap and the one and only Mikael Stavostrand on remix duties! COMING OUT FEBRUARY 2009! Read more below!
Oh, now this hits hard. Whether you like dogs’n’drugs, or whether you despise the all-too-obvious - or is it?! -, this record will stay in your twisted mind for a long time. You have been warned. But first things first. AIRDROP, the label which seems unstoppable, considering the amount of records this young French-(South-) American imprint churns out every month, is back again!
And it’s the Soul Clap boys from Boston who come up with the next outing, outdoing themselves every single time. It’s becoming increasingly hard to hammer them down to a certain sound or aesthetic as their thirst for innovation is just unquenchable! Just when you thought you kind of pigeon-holed the two crazy-ass house lovers who do not shy away from direct references and cheeky samples (“Ppupppppppy crack..”) by labeling them somewhat discofunky deephouse techy, they strike back with a record that’s just waaaay out. Unexplainable.
It all starts nice and steady with a tingly little percussive rhythm, but not without an opener that sets the scene: some weirdo looking for his “puppy crack” -- drugs for dogs? Chillout choice of the night? Oh yeah. Snorts, klicking noises and space balls effects create the kind of tongue-in-cheek atmosphere that is typical for the likes of Soul Clap, as the humoristic DJ/ producer outfit does not even shy away to make turkey themed songs for Thanksgiving!
In all seriousness though: “Puppy Crack” is a potent dance drug and should immediately be banned to avoid further brain damage. Dripping into your drainage like some highly potent acid, the track breaks down into the wonkiest mayhem that clubbers’ ears have heard in a long time!
For those who like it darker, the ragged “Beat The Puppy” tool is the one! Not beating around the bush but rather beating the poor squelching animal, the track rages subliminally, gripping tight around the neck with a metallic beat that should have any old party dog wagging its tail rhythmically while the voice filters in causing uproar with its build-up.
Call in the ambulance and hope the doctor saving you when you overdose is Mikael Stavöstrand: he is just such a fine balancer and knows how to dose right: “Puppy Crack” becomes a deep entrancing affair with squelching noises and hypnotic synths that underline squeaking and clicking effects. Slowly the whole affair culminates in an evil addiction you did not even notice you developed. Yaaaaay!
