I use them both together.
Vermona to get the more ruff edge round sounds, the MD for the more silky sharp sounds and of course the really friendly sequencer.
As you already said, the 808 and 909 are quite some limited machines and still very popular.
In my thoughts they're quite succesfull (mostly the 808) because they fit really well with almost everything around it.
you can integrate the drumkit easily in all kinds of music perspectives.
Maybe we also need to give the MD and DRM machines a bit more time to really appreciate .
Like when they're out of production and cost circa 1500 bucks, would we still buy them?
