Two elements can be enough to make a good track.

for minimal techno, a kick drum and another patch is all you need.

forget basslines/ snares/ hihats/pads/ leadlines /FX / etc, etc, .............

with synthesizers you dont need all those obvious elements for minimal music.

get your synth doing something complex and interesting that covers the frequency ranges and has a percussive feel, dont worry about what its called, and stick a kick on it.

thats minimal techno for me. that other stuff is house / trance / progressive /cheese, whatever you want to call it.

listen to Robert Hood and Daniel Bell, to see where it came from, and to Sleep Archive to see where its just passed through, and then do your own thing.

sorry guys i just love to stir things up :)
I reckon even in 11 months' time this will remain the post of the year.

fck ye!!!
just wanted to post earlier, that for techno you need maybe two elements: a kick and a something-else :D The interplay(intercourse?) of all the "elements" should form one flow where the "elements" become indistinguishable...

my 2 (maybe a bit vague) cents

Well to be the first one paying attention to the original question and not over analyzing things;

A pad (to me) tends to be a softer sound with a longer attack, usually a longer release or maybe some reverb and/or delay.

Feel free to correct me as you see necessary.

all you need is what you think it necessary...start with a kickdrum tweak a lil bit, play with the pitch till ideas starts to come then you see what elements you need....you can start with sometime else too, it depends on the inspiration you have at the moment...

yeah I agree with 'do whatever'.

as soon as you start breaking it down into recognisable elements you loose the magic.

It's all just different frequencies to be used and different tools to play with them... Synthesisers don't usually have the same fixedness in architecture like drums , guitars, strings, horns.
