i stopped eq'ing when i realized it permanently fucks things up. nowadays i use filters, HP, LP, BP, to do the same thing. this way i'm not altering the frequency ranges that i want, instead i am chiseling away at it to minimize clutter. i like doing things in a subtractive method, initially i build up a good size of material, and then i spend the rest of the time taking away from what i have. cutting out parts, creating a progression in the song. it is very similar to working with stone, glass or metal. beginning with a blank hunk of rock i try to imagine where various features would go, what configurations i can achieve given the limitations of the material i am using, etc.
