yeah, it's a good option!!
i usualy run on about 10% cpu usage. leaves lots of power for working on new sounds. as soon as i nailed them, i freeze em. i usualy wait with flattening until after arrangement when i start to mix down.
thank god ableton decided to flex the freeze option, cuz the first version didn't allow editing while in the freeze mode. didn't use it much tho...i think i should cuz most of the projects go up untill 80% or more.
yes, same here. it even kept me away from using live for producing.

freezing the tracks is a very good option in terms of the cpu usage, but on some instruments the freeze option cuts some of the sounds, it sounds different when they are freezed.

i have no idea if its better on your CPU to be running a ton of audio or some midi instruments. i would imagine it is
a ton of audio works fine in my case  ... with midi instruments the risk of a crash on stage is higher... at least for me... 400 and more scenes and no crash until now...
my ideal solution: some audio in live, as usual, and midi routed to external devices
