If you aren't living in the european union i have good news for you... they don't check your luggage for laptops or etc... "anyways you can alsow bring along an old laptop and throw it away in england and go home with a new one"....

They're not gonna list your personal items in either direction. I've flown a couple of trips during the new security conditions (but not with ryanair) and it hasn't been so strict. The dimensions you can carry as hand luggage allow you to take a laptop-bag. I wouldn't worry about coming home with it. Just make it look like your trusty laptop that you have always used and you'll be okay. They might give it a little sniff at the security checkpoint, but that's only for terror control.

Even before the security alerts, ryanair seemed really strict with their hand-luggage weight and dimensions. But when I got to the check-in my full-up record bag didn't even get looked at.

Just received a mail from ryanair concerning hand baggage. Maybe interesting for people who fly to the netaudio festival in London this weekend:
HAND BAGGAGE RESTRICTIONS – FLIGHTS FROM THE UK, POLAND, FRANCE &
ITALY

Please see below for the new hand baggage restrictions for flights from
the UK, Poland (to the UK), France & Italy (to the UK)

Hand Baggage Allowance (10kg per person)

Each passenger is permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage up to
10kg (bag dimensions have been reduced for all flights departing from the
UK). If you are departing from a UK airport and in accordance with the
UK Department for Transport, the following reduced cabin baggage
dimensions apply - 45cm (length), 35cm (width) and 16cm (depth). These
dimensions include the wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.
Passengers who arrive at a UK airport with hand baggage exceeding the
above dimensions will be required to pay an additional checked bag fee
or if they are over the maximum 20kg baggage allowance per person, an
excess baggage fee will be charged of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local
currency equivalent).

General Information on Checked Baggage Allowances

A checked baggage allowance of 20kg per passenger applies to each
customer who has paid a checked bag fee. Any passenger checking in baggage
exceeding their checked baggage allowance of 20kg per person will be
charged an excess baggage fee of £5.50/€8 per kilo (or local currency
equivalent).
Passengers may not use the unused checked baggage allowance of other
passengers. No pooling/sharing of the checked baggage allowance is
permitted, even within a party travelling on the same Confirmation Number.

Checking In for Flights

Passengers should check in no later than 2 hours prior to their
scheduled flight departure, to allow sufficient time to check in and to clear
security. Flights cannot wait for passengers delayed at security
points.
Please see hand baggage restrictions for each country listed below:

Hand Baggage Restrictions for Flights Departing from the UK and Poland

Each passenger is permitted to carry ONE item of hand baggage through
the airport security point. The maximum dimensions must not exceed a
45cm (length), 35ch (width) and 16cm (depth). These dimensions would
include the wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.). All items carried by
passengers will be x-ray screened.
N.B. These restricted hand baggage dimensions are smaller than our
published hand baggage dimensions.

As a result of these restrictions - extra seats cannot be purchased for
the carriage of musical instruments, wedding dresses etc

Passengers carrying hand baggage that is larger that the above
dimensions will not be permitted to enter the security restricted area and will
not be permitted to return to the check-in area. In order to ensure
that you will be accepted for entry to the security restricted area,
please ensure that you fully comply with the following:

Cabin/hand baggage MUST NOT contain:

Any cosmetics
Any toiletries
Any liquids
Any drinks
Cigarette lighters
No gels, pastes, lotions, (e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks,
