DX-200

Post by trak660 »

Does anyone here have a Yamaha DX-200?
I hate everything about my DX-27 and SY-77 except for the sounds that come out of them. I want something FM with a good sequencer on it. Would this be a good "groove box" for an FM fan? Would it replace my keyboards? :) I'd hate to get one by mail and find out that it's crap!

it has a very flakey OS as I recall... (lots of bugs) for example that it sometimes misses to trig notes etc. beside that it has problems with it's very slow dsp etc. I've a had a TG-77 so I know what you're saying, but it's not _that_ bad if you put your mind into it. otherwise, how about some software choices of FM?

what goes for the dx-200; I guess it's still useable, just don't pay more than 200 bucks or something... just be aware of what I said hehe

is the same as the dx 7 with out keys.... well worth the 150 bucks...the fm on it sounds good too...

p.s. hardware always sounds better than software....

Since it's already digital, I say go soft.

I've had one for a couple years

it's definitely a fun FM synth,

the FS1R is really nice FM, but more expensive and less knobs.

some things to be aware of
it does not send sequencer data out
so don't expect it to drive other hardware
the drums suck they are really thin samples

on the plus side, the sequencer is fairly simple to sketch a melody
the envelope generater [EG] makes some nice flowing evolving sounds
and it has some basic FX built in, I mostly use the distortion.

I bought it instead of a korg electribe which says something

Apples and oranges, imo. I'd say you're buying the MD as much for the interface as the sound, which isn't the case with any FM synth. Again, imo.

well, i love fm synths. so maybe it boils down to personal taste... I use a dx200 (paid 100 bucks for it) and also have used operator. The dx200 (the synth engine that is) to me is more fun and sounds better than operator *(which ipaid more for and now don't really like to use)...however software is much easier to use if you do live pa and stuff like that. midi syncing the dx to your host can be tricky.
