Impedance of hardware?

Post by hydrogen »

measuring impedance on outboard gear... is there any solid way to do this? i'm wanting to know the best wear to wire up the gear into which inputs on my soundcard for optimum settings.

I don't think its as simple as unbalanced/balanced... unless i've misunderstood?

Thanks!

some equipment, such as amplifiers/preamps might require a DI box. for cheap soundcards, where the only inputs are aux/line-in and mic, you should mix everything on a mixing board and use the tape-out. with cheap soundcards, never ever use the mic input. your mixing console will handle the different types of inputs, as well as output in the correct manner (so as not to damage your computer or the soundcard via electric surges).

of course the ideal situation is to buy a nice soundcard with multiple inputs so you can do multitrack recording, use phantom power for mics, etc.

i've got a fireface 400 and presonus digimax fs... but it looks like i shouldn't be plugging my juno106 into any of the pre-amp inputs.

If i wanted to take advantage of those inputs with these other synths maybe i need a di box for them?

I'd avoid inputs 1/2 on the Presonus since they are guitar impedances, other than that I'd just use the TRS of the nuetriks. No need for a DI box unless you are running very long cables.

Its a subject of debate, some people say they get better results with a DI box, some say that you will get a better sound without. Maybe send RME an email, some manufacturers say different things about synths and DI boxes.
I think its very much a case of get one from a friend and give it a go, see what works for you.

thanks so much for the advice and comments. and even checking the specs on the digimaxFS. 8)

Good idea to just get one and do some A/B test. Cheers!
