Quesiont about hardware and managing midi?

Post by hydrogen »

This is essentially a question for how i should hook up all this gear... so let me explain what i have.

If i need to send constant sysex data to a device, ie: yamaha tx7 or juno-2, do i need to have it on a separate midi device? or is there a way to limit sysex data to a specific channel?

i'm wanting to use some patch editors and i can't figure out the best midi routing for everything here.

thanks!

I send sysex data back and forth to my esq1 via an external midi box. its just a cheap edirol one and it works just fine.

What you are looking for is commonly called a device ID. Device ID numbers are not found commonly in home studio, techno guy/girl set ups so you don't see a lot about it anymore. Synthesizers like waldorf and Access still allow you to assign a device ID. You usually need a high end midi break out box and/or a more sophisticated DAW like MAX/MSP or such.

word! i'm thinking of just rerouting all this stuff... i'm reading more about sysex stuff... doesn't that mean System exclusive? so the messages are encoded to only be read by a certain device in the midi chain?
