Hi hats like these

Post by eggnchips »

Love the hihats on this track. The open that comes in around 2:30 is immense.
Do you guys think it's just a straight sample or has it been treated with effects?
Any tips for grunging up hats?

Ha ha, sorry, look at the time I posted. Half asleep I was.

i think it's a TR-909 or TR-808 hihat driven though a mackie mixer and sampled into an emu SP12.

use a dedicated drum synth. not every synth has fast enough envelopes (even the soft synths).
fastest attack and very fast decay with white noise in the source.
program the hi hats between kicks.
disable quantize and SWING THEM.

i think the open hat is sampled.
